Tupelo Opens Small Storm Shelters Ahead of Severe Weather

The city of Tupelo has opened its small storm shelters as a severe weather system approaches. Shelters are available at locations including the Rockwell Center, Gumtree Park, Veterans Park, Ballard Park, and Haven Acres, according to city officials.

Additional shelters are behind Tupelo Fire Department Station No. 3 and at the Belden Fire Department on Endville Road. Large storm shelters at Theron Nichols Park and Lee Acres will open at 4:30 p.m., the city said.

Mississippi is under a severe weather threat starting Sunday evening and continuing into early Monday morning. The forecast calls for severe storms, damaging winds up to 70 mph, hail up to quarter size, and possible tornadoes, officials warned.

Residents are advised to stay weather-aware, have multiple ways to receive alerts, and know their designated safe places, according to authorities.
