Mississippi prepares for severe weather, opens school shelters

The Tupelo Public School District announced it will open shelters at Tupelo High School, Carver, Joyner, and Thomas Street schools at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The shelters are in response to a severe weather threat across Mississippi, according to district officials.

Forecasters warn that the entire state could experience severe storms starting Sunday evening and continuing into early Monday. The National Weather Service predicts damaging winds up to 70 mph, hail up to quarter size, and the possibility of tornadoes.

Residents are advised to stay weather-aware, have multiple ways to receive alerts, and identify safe places. Authorities emphasize the importance of preparedness during the storm system’s approach.
