Tupelo Police Assist in Drug Trafficking Case Leading to 10-Year Prison Sentence

TUPELO, Miss. – A high-speed chase ending in Lee County has resulted in a 10-year prison sentence for a man convicted of trafficking methamphetamine.

On Monday, August 11, 2025, Lazerick C. Travis pleaded guilty in Lee County Circuit Court before Judge Michael P. Mills, Jr., just before jury selection began. Judge Mills sentenced Travis to 10 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, followed by five years of post-release supervision. By law, Travis must serve every day of his sentence with no chance for parole or early release.

The case began with a traffic stop in Pontotoc County by Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper Phillip Mitchell, which escalated into a high-speed pursuit ending in Lee County. The Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics led the drug investigation, with significant assistance from the Tupelo Police Department, Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Office, and other law enforcement partners.

District Attorney Jason D. Herring praised the collaborative effort, noting that the teamwork between state and local agencies “made this a successful prosecution.” Assistant District Attorneys Josh Wise and Paul Gault handled the case for the State of Mississippi.
