Winter Storm Fern prompts caution as black ice risks persist

Emergency crews responded to numerous calls for downed trees and limbs caused by ice accumulation during Winter Storm Fern, according to local authorities. Heavy rains early this morning aided efforts to clear roads and bridges, and wind increases after noon helped dry surfaces.

However, officials warn that residual moisture combined with overnight freezing temperatures could create dangerous black ice conditions later today and tonight. The roads and bridges may remain wet or icy, increasing the risk for drivers.

Tonight, the response team will monitor for black ice and treat affected areas as needed. They will also respond to downed trees and limbs to keep roads open for emergency services. Authorities continue to recommend only emergency travel during this period.

The storm’s main weather event has passed, and crews will transition to regular operations at 6 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26.
