Online Course Explores Sociology of Music this Summer

A new online course titled “Sociology of Music” will be offered this summer as part of SOC 440. Led by instructor Scott Barretta, host of MPB’s “Highway 61” blues radio show, the class explores how music constructs meaning and shapes moods in everyday settings.

The course covers topics such as subcultures and fandoms, the impact of new media on music interaction, genre definitions, and how cultural value is assigned to different types of music. Participants will gain insights into why some music is celebrated while others are dismissed.
