Theater production of ‘The Miss Firecracker Contest’ opens in Nashville
The Lyric Theatre in Nashville opens Beth Henley’s play ‘The Miss Firecracker Contest’ on Thursday night, running through Saturday. Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, with a matinee at 2 p.m. Saturday, according to the theater’s website.
Directed by Bobby Geno and sponsored by Meredith Martin of TM Realtors, the play centers on Carnelle Scott, who is rehearsing intensely for the upcoming Miss Firecracker Contest. She hopes a win will repair her damaged reputation and allow her to leave town in style.
The story becomes more complicated with the arrival of her cousin Elain, a former Miss Firecracker winner, and threats from Elain’s eccentric brother, Delmount, to sell the family homestead and relocate to New Orleans. The cast also includes Popeye, a shy seamstress smitten with Delmount, and several other colorful characters.
The comedy promises humor, compassion, and lyricism as characters seek to escape their troubled pasts and pursue brighter futures, according to the synopsis.
