Winter Storm Fern Continues to Impact City with Ice and Sleet
Public Works crews are working throughout the city to manage the ongoing effects of Winter Storm Fern, which has brought freezing rain and sleet. The west side has experienced greater accumulations of ice on roads, bridges, and trees, according to city officials.
Crew members have reapplied chemicals to affected areas and retreated all bridges, box culverts, and super-elevations across the city. They are now beginning to use snowplows on bridges and roads with enough loose sleet and ice, thanks to pretreatment applied last night that prevented bonding to surfaces.
After the snowplows pass, crews plan to reapply treatments to reinforce the initial pretreatments. A shift change is scheduled for 6 p.m., with the night crew continuing to treat areas and respond to service calls as conditions allow.
