Auditions for the play “The Woman in Black” will be held at TCT Off-Broadway on July 25 and 26 at 5 p.m., according to a news release. The theater is located at 213 East Franklin Street, behind the arena.
The production is scheduled for Oct. 1-3. No prior preparation is required for auditions, but actors are advised to wear comfortable clothing suitable for movement. Director Denise Truscott can be contacted at Truscott.art@gmail.com with questions, the release said.
The play, adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from Susan Hill’s novel, involves four roles: two men and two women over age 18. It centers on an older man recounting his haunted past to an actor, with a story set in England’s East Coast. The narrative builds to a chilling climax as a young woman dressed in black appears at a funeral, stirring an atmosphere of dread.
The roles include an older Kipps, who appears in his 40s to 60s and plays multiple characters, requiring British dialects, mime, and physicality. A young Kipps, in his 20s, must portray a self-assured actor and an earnest, increasingly terrified young man, also using British dialects and movement. The Woman, a non-speaking but pivotal character, must have a menacing presence, with makeup and costume design adding to the tension. This role may be performed by two different actors to create the ghostly effect, the release stated.
