Tupelo prepares for winter storm Fern with pre-treatment efforts

City of Tupelo crews are preparing for Winter Storm Fern, which is expected to bring freezing rain and ice to the area. Public Works crews will mobilize Friday at 6 p.m. to begin pre-treating bridges and super-elevations for emergency services.

The storm’s forecasted ice accumulation poses more challenges than snowfall. Crews are concerned about ice on bridges, roads, and fallen trees, which cannot be cleared with snowplows. Instead, they will use salt, calcium chloride, sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, and abrasives to treat roadways.

Public Works teams will work around the clock during the storm to maintain road safety. Officials plan to provide updates on road conditions as Fern progresses through the city. Residents are advised to stay informed and exercise caution during the weather event.
