Inmate Dies After Collapsing at Lowndes County Detention Center
LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. – Authorities are investigating the death of a male inmate who collapsed Sunday evening at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center.
According to the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, the inmate, who had been in custody for 37 days awaiting trial, collapsed while climbing a set of stairs to his cell shortly before 6 p.m. on August 10.
Detention center staff immediately began life-saving measures, including CPR, until Columbus Fire Department personnel and emergency medical technicians arrived. The inmate was then transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital–Golden Triangle, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 6:54 p.m.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will lead a full investigation into the incident, while the Lowndes County Coroner’s Office will send the body to Jackson for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Coroner Greg Merchant said the inmate’s identity will be released once next of kin are notified. The sheriff’s office extended its condolences to the man’s family and loved ones.
