Meet the Crew: Paul Berman, Light and Sound Designer with a Theatre Roots

Paul Berman, a light and sound designer, was raised in a family deeply involved in musical theater and drama, according to a recent profile. He’s been familiar with shows like “Fiddler on the Roof” long before he watched “Sesame Street.”

Berman has a fondness for “West Side Story,” though he admits it has led to a rational fear of rumbles. His journey in theater began when he sought to join the Tupelo Community Theater as a musician. His first gig was working lights and sound for “The Miss Firecracker Contest.”

His success in operating the technical equipment prompted him to take on more roles, including lighting for “Young Frankenstein” and playing guitar in the orchestra for “Grease,” where he performed alongside some of the area’s top musicians. When asked to join the crew for “The Woman in Black,” Berman initially thought it would be an easy task, given it involved only two actors. However, he quickly learned otherwise and now says he needs a vacation.

“The Woman in Black,” directed by Denise Truscott, runs from October 1-3, 2026, at Tupelo Community Theater. Performances are scheduled Thursday through Saturday at 7 p.m., with matinees Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and are available at www.tctlyric.com.
